Creating the next generation fly fishing reel has always been a dream at REEL Fly Fishing. We do this by pursuing new designs, pushing CNC boundaries, introducing new carbon lattice drag systems and experimenting with robust coatings.

A good fly reel will have either a fantastic drag system, amazing aesthetics or perhaps even offer weight specific features – but a truly great reel will have all of these aspects.

Introducing the APEX, a fly reel built with an obsessive desire to be the best there is!

Creating a new fly reel is an incredibly exciting process, and after countless revisions and adjustments, we settled on two final 3D renders.

It was clear that both these sensational designs would need to make their way into production, hence we have two models, the APEX and APEX Light.

The Design and Features

The APEX fly reel range is all about the details and weight specific features.

The design ethos behind the APEX was to combine two of nature’s strongest materials, a spider’s web and a diamond. The design embodies these two incredible materials, with the diamonds interwoven between the web. Most regular fly reels today make use of a hoop around the spool, however through an innovative process we were able to remove the hoop entirely while still keeping rigidity and strength unchanged. This hoopless design creates a stunning front and rear profile that looks almost surreal. An oversize easy to grip drag knob is essential when making fine adjustments mid fight, this is an area we focused on to create a seamless experience that you can feel with each small click

Features

The current two weights for the APEX range have individual features that are specific to their class. The APEX 5.6 has an open frame design and a reduced maximum pressure drag pressure when compared to the heavier model, this in turn helps reduce weight and maximizes fly rod balance.

The APEX 7.8 features a full frame design and increased maximum drag pressure to slow and stop a fish’s run effortlessly. A full frame design increases overall strength and rigidity, especially as you begin to maximise drag pressure. A full framed option is also a key area to look at when using a reel for Euro Nymphing, and while it may seem out of place to pair such a large reel with a small 3-5wt rod, the balance often works beautifully.

The APEX is primarily a heavy gunned slat water specific fly reel that has been crafter around the idea of daily use on the flats and shoreline.

A heavily textured rear drag knob controls a beautifully smooth completely waterproof barrel styled multi stacked carbon disk drag system. The drag be adjusted incrementally from zero (no free-spooling to avoid over-winds) to an almost impossible maximum pressure. A low audible click is present on both the retrieval/outgoing of the spool.

Start-up inertia and overall drag usability is an extremely important aspect of a truly next generation fly fishing reel, the APEX range has a multitude of latticed and heavily woven carbon discs that provide almost zero start-up inertia while still remaining cool and maintenance free no matter situation. The APEX features our most powerful drag system, with enough maximum stopping power for even the most powerful salt water species.

The days of having to service and care for your drag system is long gone, no need for oils/greases or lubes, the drag system innovations are a key area that sets this reel apart from anything else on the local South African market.

 

CNC design cutting is pushed to the limits on the APEX range of reels, each reel starts out as a block of the highest quality A6060-T6 aluminum bar stock – the same quality aluminum airplanes are made from.

Through a lengthy amount of time and with a detailed highly accurate CNC needle point milling, the APEX is slowly turned and refined. Machined fly reels are robust, rigid and extremely durable in comparison to lower cost cast aluminium reels. The knobs, frames, spools, reel seat and other components are all new and unique the A P E X range and fully machined to ensure precise close tolerances that you can expect from a world class fly reel. We make use of a 5-axis CNC machine to create the design on both the APEX and APEX light range.
