2wt 8′ 8″ Origin

The Origin 2 weight 8 foot and 8 inches is our ultimate small stream fly fishing rod, that has been specially built for the Cape Streams.

Designing a taper for the new 2wt was an exciting challenge, to create a fly rod that ticks the “perfect small stream” box. The rod would need to be long, but not overly long as this can create additional challenges on the more technical sections, hence we chose a length based on feedback and testing at just a bit below 9 foot. The 8 foot, 8 inches gives you the reach when you need it, but also the ability to tuck the rod tightly when going through a tighter more close-quarters section.

The slightly longer length also allowed us to adjust the taper and create a softer more finessed tip section, to dramatically improve light tipper protection while still having a nice fast action with a stiffer mid-to-butt section that loads up easily with the correctly weighted fly line even in windy conditions.

While a 1 weight is always a beautiful rod for the river, it does have quite a few limitations when the wind comes ripping through a small stream valley, however stepping up to a 2 weight gives you a bit more control while still having that small stream feel and thin line taper to make mending and presentation a “breeze”.

The overall construction and components chosen all serve a distinct purpose on the Origin 8’8″ 2 weight, the matt black blank has almost no rod flash, while the low kep black guides and matt reel seat further reduce the chances of any hardware flash. This all wraps up into a fly rod that is stealthy in both its appearance as well as its approach, excelling in fishing clear thin streams where fish are spooked all to easily.
