New for April 2024 is an addition to the Origin II range of fly reels, the Origin II Euro Nymph Edition (5.6.7wt only)

Based on the feedback and testing from our clients, partners, and test anglers we started to design a bespoke nymphing-focused spool that would be able to accommodate this rapidly developing side of fly fishing. An ultra-large arbor, with minimal capacity to house the thin 0.55mm euro nymph fly lines was the focus with these new spools/reels.

Increasing the strength of the spool for those missions out to the Orange and Vaal rivers was another area we focused on, adding in a spool hoop and two additional spool spokes resulted in an extremely rigid spool that could handle the tough South African conditions.

Our vision with the Origin II 5.6.7wt has always been to minimize the excess we all naturally gather over time, and by having almost one fly reel that can be used on your light euro nymphing rod can simply be switched to another spool and handle lines up to 8wt. This unique adaptability sets the Origin II fly reel apart and offers dependability, adaptability, and stunning aesthetics at a pice point that is hard to beat.

The back story of the Origin II

The Origin II marks a whole new standard for us here at Reel Fly Fishing, by incorporating specific design and performance-orientated features into a fly reel.

The Origin II is our most technically advanced fly reel to date and designing the reel from start to finish in-house (Designed By Reel Fly Fishing Owner, Shaun Carstens) means we have an intricate knowledge of not just how the reel performs but how it will last!

The original Origin was an evolution of the brand and showed that performance and good aesthetics don’t need to be hidden behind a high price tag. Work began in 2020 on version II, knowing that following the original Origin would always be a hard task. However, we do believe we have stepped up to the challenge and created a worthy successor and a new benchmark for ourselves.

The Origin II delivers the latest in design tolerances, size, and functionality and incorporates our beautifully smooth sealed carbon drag system. The DNA heritage of the Origin range of fly rods runs through strongly on the read of the Origin II 5.6.7 fly reel. This helical-inspired design creates a unique style of fly reel that also does away with traditional spool hoops to really showcase our vision. A spool hoop reduces backing drying time and adds unnecessary weight to lighter fly reels.

The drag system has been optimized for almost no free-spooling, as well as remaining exceptionally smooth with zero startup inertia. Tipping the scales at a mere 138g while still housing sealed drag shows just how far we went to make the reel light but still extremely strong and durable.

The slim side profile was a key functional design we chose as a thinner profile resulted in less bulk, more balance, and better handling. The thinner profile houses a deep V-shaped spool that can carry ample backing and aids in an exceptionally quick retrieve.

The Origin II 5.6.7wt makes for an ideal Euro and Czech nymphing reel due to its lightweight nature, full frame design, oversized thin arbor, and exceptionally silky smooth drag system. 

The Origin II is not so much an evolution but rather, a revolution!
