The RFF semi-auto fly reel is a type of fishing reel that blends some of the features of traditional fly reels with modern innovations to make the casting and retrieving process more efficient and easier.
Basic Structure: Like other fly reels, a semi-auto fly reel consists of a spool, a drag system, and a handle. The spool is where the fishing line is wound, and the drag system controls the resistance the fish feels when pulling the line. This is set with an Allen key adjustment on the front of the spool.
Semi-Automatic Function: The semi-auto aspect primarily refers to the reel’s ability to assist with line retrieval. Unlike traditional fly reels, which require you to manually wind the handle to retrieve line, a semi-auto fly reel features a mechanism that automates part of this process.
Automatic Spool Movement: When you cast, the semi-auto reel helps manage the line by automatically adjusting the spool’s position or tension to maintain a consistent line retrieval speed. This involves a spring and geared mechanism that engages when you begin the retrieve.
- Lever Operation: the RFF semi-auto reel has a lever that you can press to engage or disengage the automatic features. This allows you to control when the reel assists in retrieving the line.
- Improved Casting: The semi-auto mechanism helps in smoother retrieving and line management, as it can reduce the manual effort required and provide a more consistent line retrieval rate. Works exceptionally well when dry fly fishing as well as tight line or Euro Nymphing.
- Drag and Tension: Despite the automation, you still have control over the drag system, which lets you adjust the amount of resistance a fish encounters when pulling on the line.
