4wt 9’2″ Origin

The Origin 4 weight 9 foot 2 inch is a light but powerful fly rod that is perfect for smaller stillwater and larger river applications.

Designing a taper for the new 4wt was an exciting challenge, to create a fly rod that would allow anglers to take advantage of smaller still waters in the greater Dullstroom and Natal areas, where a 5 weight can be a little bit overkill. The rod would need to be longer, but not overly long as this can create additional challenges when on a float tube, or when stealthily fishing a larger river or inlet.

The slightly longer length also allowed us to adjust the taper and create a slightly softer tip section, to improve lighter tipper protection while still having a nice fast action with a stiffer mid-to-butt section that loads up easily with the correctly weighted fly line even in windy conditions. Versatility was key, and having a rod that is comfortable casting both floating and sub-surface lines can be a tricky taper to design, but our DNA helical design allows for a huge amount of adaptability.

The grip is a standout feature, as it is designed to be fished the whole day without discomfort or slipping, a key part of any weekend away is maximizing your time on the water, and by being comfortable while casting is a key area we focused on.

The overall construction and components chosen all serve a distinct purpose on the Origin 9’2″ 4 weight, the matt black blank has almost no rod flash, while the low kep black guides and matt reel seat further reduce the chances of any hardware flash. This all wraps up into a fly rod that is stealthy in both its appearance as well as its approach, excelling in fishing clear high-altitude dams and lakes as well as the more powerful rivers and streams where you need that extra power to get larger fish away from structure.
