Designed By Reel Fly Fishing In South Africa | Tested On A Huge Variety Of Local Water | Excels On The Vaal and Orange River During Higher Flow Rates.
Setting out to create a truly next-generation Euro Nymph fly rod was always going to be a challenging task. Work began at the end of 2019 on what would, after many revisions, become our TechNymph 3wt fly rod – this was the basis that we worked from for our 5wt iteration.
Key Criteria Behind Our TechNymphs Design
When it comes to Euro Nymphing rods, several critical factors shape our approach. At Reel Fly Fishing, we’ve pinpointed that optimal feedback, exceptional tippet protection, pulling power, balance, finish, and lightweight construction are essential in crafting a premier South African Euro Nymphing rod.
Feedback
Immediate feedback is crucial for feeling the structure and bottom of the water you’re fishing. This sensitivity allows you to make the most of your fishing area. With constant contact through our specialized blank, you’ll have enhanced tactile awareness, enabling you to detect even the faintest bumps and movements of your flies. The TechNymph’s DNA helical design transmits these sensations instantly, making it easier to differentiate between a strike and the bottom structure.
Tippet Protection
Using thinner tippets can enhance sink rates and increase strikes. However, without the right rod, lighter tippets can lead to more lost fish due to breakage during fights. The TechNymph excels in tippet protection, featuring a sensitive tip that absorbs shocks and provides immediate visual feedback, helping you secure more fish.
Pulling Power
While tippet protection and visibility are vital, pulling power is what keeps you in control during fights. The TechNymph has a stiffer mid-section that extends to the butt, providing the necessary strength to turn fish and prevent them from getting snagged in South Africa’s challenging waters. The balance of pulling power and tippet protection is what distinguishes a quality Euro Nymph rod, and our 5wt 10′ TechNymph is specifically designed for high-water conditions on the Vaal and Orange Rivers.
Finish
The finish may seem subjective, but we approached it strategically. Considering a fish’s perspective, we opted for a matte grey finish that minimizes rod glare while maintaining a subtle appearance. This stealthy approach is advantageous in clearer waters. The finish also reflects the quality components we’ve integrated to enhance the overall performance of the TechNymph.
Physical Weight
A lightweight rod is essential for long days on the water, especially during frequent nymph checks. The TechNymph weighs just 105 grams, making it our top choice for fatigue-free fishing without sacrificing performance.
Balance
Balance is a defining feature of the TechNymph compared to our previous Euro Nymph 3.4 10′. By using lightweight components and down-locking reel seats, the rod achieves perfect balance when paired with the right reel. Proper balance minimizes strain during long sessions, proving that it’s not just about being light; it’s about being balanced.
Recovery Rate
A sensitive tip is vital for detecting subtle strikes, but it must also have an excellent recovery rate. Designing a responsive blank that meets all these criteria is challenging, yet our experience with previous models has led to phenomenal results. The TechNymph’s rapid recovery ensures you maintain contact with your flies from the moment they hit the water until they bounce on the bottom, enhancing accuracy and feedback.
