The Trophy Trout Truck & Trailer pack is a great choice for targeting big Rainbows and Brown Trout in the Eastern Cape’s still waters. Here’s a bit more detail on how to maximize the effectiveness of our fly pack:
Truck and Trailer Method
- Setup: Start with the larger fly (the “truck”) as the primary attractor pattern, and tie the smaller fly (the “trailer”) onto the bend of the hook of the larger fly, ideally with about 50-70cm of tippet material.
- Advantages: This method can be particularly effective in enticing fish that might be less aggressive or cautious, as the smaller fly can act as a secondary attractor. The larger fly usually attracts attention while the smaller fly can hook those more hesitant fish.
- Tip: Ensure that the smaller fly is balanced and doesn’t affect the action of the larger fly too much. This setup allows you to cover more of the water column and increases the likelihood of enticing a bite.
Dropper or Tag Method
- Setup: Attach the larger fly to the end of your leader, and then use droppers or tags to attach smaller flies above it. Maintain about 50-60cm spacing between the flies, with droppers being relatively short (around 10cm).
- Advantages: This method can be very versatile, especially if you’re fishing in varying depths or conditions. It allows for a more spread-out presentation, making it easier to mimic a wider range of food sources.
- Tip: Experiment with the length of the droppers and spacing based on water clarity and fish activity. In clearer water, longer droppers may be more effective, while in murkier conditions, shorter droppers might be better to keep the flies more concentrated.
Targeting Specific Food Sources
- Bloodworms: These are a staple in many trout diets and can be effectively imitated with specific patterns. Bloodworm patterns can be used as the smaller fly in either setup.
- Dragonfly Nymphs: These are also a key food source for large trout. Dragonfly nymph patterns can be the larger fly in your setup, as they often represent a significant meal for trout.
Fishing in Shallower Waters
- Technique: Both methods are well-suited for fishing in shallower waters where trout feed among structures. Bloodworms and dragonfly nymphs are often found in these areas, so targeting these zones with your tandem setup can be very effective.
- Presentation: Cast your flies carefully to avoid spooking fish, and consider using a slow, steady retrieve or letting the flies drift naturally with the current.
- Tippet Strength: Fishing heavier tippets in the weeded areas is key if you want to land the Trophy fish. We recommend 0X-2X here in a high-quality fluorocarbon such as Stroft FC1 or Cortlands Ultra-premium range as the diameters are thinner than most but the strength rating is higher.
- Weed Channels: Fish parallel to the weed beds of the fish are not in the shallows, as the beds often have large undercut channels where the fish are holding and waiting for a passing meal, such as dragonfly, damsel, or small minnow/tadpole.
